I've been practicing "Ki" art or energy art for about a year now, after spending over 2 months in Korea last year, learning Korean calligraphy.
"ki" in Korean means energy, therefore, it's about feeling, connecting to my inner being in the present and let the life force express itself through me. There's no thought process, it's an expression of aliveness through rhythm, curves, lines, forms and sometimes symbols.
As a very curious human being, I'm deeply interested in human connections as well as the diverse ways to communicate with each other beyond words. Along the way, I've learnt 7 languages, thinking that I could connect with many people from different cultures and backgrounds using the language as a primary tool of communication. However, since art came into my life about 9 years ago, I'm more and more drawn to subtle and less indistinct ways to convey and interact with others, creating more room for sensing and feeling which can be very impactful and connecting, leaving an ephemeral "scent" of energy in its most pure expression.
While we use the word energy all the time, it's a real mystery and is indefinable yet everyone has an experience of it. Energy, or the experience of it, is infinite, some may feel it as a connection with others, some experience it as light spectrum, some may perceive it as the original force of life, others perceive it through everything that is alive. This energy art practice is a direct reflection of the core philosophical and spiritual exploration in my life as well as a direct link to the concept of MU. The concept of MU came in my life about a year ago, this word is a fascinating one as in my native land, Korean shamanism is called muism.
Muism contains the word Mu which means many things, it's a prefix of negation (not), absence of, void etc...but it also means pure awareness prior to knowledge and experience and in Korea, Mu also means shaman.
This energy practice allows me to be an alive expression, beyond what I think or imagine myself to be, away from the stories I make through my spectral consciousness and come to a space of nothingness, void where nothing seems to really exist yet, I give form and life by simply being present.
The video is a a short glimpse of the ritual I was invited to do with a mime legend, Yu Gin Gyu who has been relentlessly reviving the art of miming in Korea for the last 50 years. With time, he moved from pantomime to more ritualistic performances, rooted in Korean ceremonies.

저는 작년에 한국에서 두 달 넘게 한국 서예를 배운 후 지금까지 약 1년 동안 "기" 예술이나 에너지 예술을 연습해 왔습니다.
한국어로 "기"는 에너지를 의미합니다. 따라서 현재의 내 내면과 연결되는 느낌, 생명력이 나를 통해 표현되도록 하는 것입니다. 사고 과정은 없으며 리듬, 곡선, 선, 형태, 때로는 상징을 통해 살아있음을 표현합니다.
저는 호기심이 많은 인간으로서 인간관계뿐만 아니라 말을 넘어 서로 소통하는 다양한 방식에 깊은 관심을 갖고 있습니다. 그 과정에서 나는 언어를 주요 의사소통 도구로 사용하여 다양한 문화와 배경을 가진 많은 사람들과 연결될 수 있다고 생각하면서 7개 언어를 배웠습니다. 그러나 약 9년 전에 예술이 내 삶에 들어온 이후로 나는 다른 사람들과 소통하고 상호 작용하는 미묘하고 덜 불분명한 방법에 점점 더 끌리게 되었고, 매우 영향력 있고 연결될 수 있는 감각과 느낌의 여지를 더 많이 만들고, 가장 순수한 표현의 에너지의 일시적인 "향기"입니다.
우리는 항상 에너지라는 단어를 사용하지만, 이는 정말 신비스럽고 정의할 수 없지만 모든 사람이 에너지에 대한 경험을 갖고 있습니다. 에너지 또는 그에 대한 경험은 무한합니다. 어떤 사람은 그것을 다른 사람과의 연결로 느낄 수도 있고, 어떤 사람은 빛의 스펙트럼으로 느낄 수도 있고, 어떤 사람은 그것을 생명의 근원적 힘으로 인식할 수도 있고, 다른 사람은 살아있는 모든 것을 통해 그것을 인식할 수도 있습니다. 이러한 에너지 아트 실천은 내 삶의 핵심 철학적, 정신적 탐구를 직접적으로 반영하는 동시에 MU 개념과도 직접적으로 연결됩니다. MU라는 개념은 약 1년 전 내 삶에 들어왔는데, 이 단어는 내 조국에서 한국의 샤머니즘을 뮤이즘이라고 부르는 것처럼 매우 흥미로운 단어이다.
Muism에는 많은 것을 의미하는 Mu라는 단어가 포함되어 있으며 부정(아님), 부재, 공백 등의 접두사이지만 지식과 경험 이전의 순수한 인식을 의미하기도 하며 한국에서 Mu는 무당을 의미하기도 합니다.
이 에너지 수행을 통해 나는 내가 생각하거나 상상하는 것 이상으로, 유령 의식을 통해 만드는 이야기에서 벗어나, 아직 아무것도 존재하지 않는 것 같은 무(無)의 공간, 공허한 공간에 이르게 되어 살아있는 표현이 될 수 있습니다. 단순히 존재함으로써 형태와 생명을 얻을 수 있습니다.
이 영상은 지난 50년 동안 한국에서 마임 예술을 끊임없이 부활시켜 온 마임 전설 유진규 와 함께 제가 초대받은 의식의 짧은 모습입니다. 시간이 지나면서 그는 무언극에서 한국 의례에 뿌리를 둔 좀 더 의식적인 공연으로 옮겨갔습니다.
